Parish records

The history of Pockthorpe and the parish  |  St James the Less  |  Mousehold Heath  |  William of Norwich  |  St William's Chapel  |  the barracks  |  Pockthorpe Brewery  |  old maps of the parish  |  parish records

The Norfolk Record Office (NRO) holds many original documents from the parish. It is possible to see them if you wish - you have to produce an Archives Card to gain access to the searchroom, and order the documents in advance.

The old parish registers for St James date back to the 18th century. In them can be found the records of baptisms, marriages and funerals that took place at the church,  Like all such registers, they are also held at the NRO, and so fragile that they cannot be handled. Facsimiles can be viewed at both the NRO and the Heritage Centre (in the Forum). The registers are also available here at the Family Search website (registration required).

Banns

The first page of the register of banns.  The banns for John Gorbell and Sarah Sayer (No. 1 on the page) were announced in St James's Church on 31st March, 14th April and 1st May 1754. The banns were read out by the curate, William Herne.
